How to carry a massage table without wrecking it (or yourself)

I’ve spent years going in and out of hotels and homes with a massage table on my back in Mallorca. This is what I’ve learned the hard way: scuffed upholstery, one table that got soaked and never lost the smell, and a couple of bad backs. In order: car, stairs, public transport, hotels, and the things that wreck tables without you noticing.

1. In the car

  • Never loose in the boot. Every hard brake is a knock on a corner. Bag zipped up and, if you can, laid flat with the padded side up.
  • Watch what goes on top. Upholstery marks under anything heavy left on it for 20 minutes. Put the table on top of everything else, or upright against the seat back.
  • Summer: vinyl at 60 °C inside a car softens and marks. Light-coloured bag, or a blanket over it if it’s going to sit in the sun for hours.

2. Stairs with no lift

  • Wheels don’t climb stairs. Take the side grips and carry it up, table held close to your body, not swinging.
  • If it’s more than two floors, consider using the bag without wheels that day: 2 kg less.
  • Go up with the legs end facing down: if it slips, it lands on the frame, not the upholstery.

3. Public transport

  • Wheeled bag, no argument. Platforms, corridors, ramps: that’s where it earns its money.
  • Ticket barriers are the enemy: use the wide gate.
  • On the bus, between your legs or in the wheelchair space if it’s free.

4. Hotels

  • Walk in through the main entrance with the bag closed. Reception notices: a clean black bag is a professional; a table wrapped in a blanket is a problem.
  • Ask for the service lift if the guest one is small. Most hotels have one and would rather you used it.
  • Leave the bag in the room hallway, not the bathroom (damp).

5. What wrecks tables without you noticing

  • Dragging it without a bag across the car park floor: the legs get scratched and grit gets into the folding mechanism.
  • Storing it wet. Even just from rain. Upholstery doesn’t forgive it.
  • Folding it with the headrest on. It bends the mounting.
  • Carrying it by the table’s own strap instead of by the bag: factory straps don’t last a year.

6. Your back

Swap shoulders each trip. Adjust the strap so the bag sits at hip height, not swinging at your knee. And if you do more than three visits a day, stop carrying and start pulling: the with wheels or without comparison explains it with numbers.
